Highlights

Saint Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) recently undertook the largest construction project since the facility was originally built in 1954. The new three story 'Great Expansion' sits on the northwest corner of the current location and houses a new Emergency Department, Surgical Suite, Sterile Processing Department, Mental Health and Addiction Services. The Emergency Department doubled its original size and now has two trauma rooms, plus 15 exam rooms. The Surgery Suite now has four Operating Rooms, one endoscopy procedure room, plus all new recovery and pre-op bays. The Sterile Processing Department is sized to handle 9,000 surgical cases annually.

Korbel Associates' service began in September 2013, with a complete inventory of all departments involved in the project.  On-site user group meetings followed and Design Development was complete by June 2014.  We formatted our reports to fit Ontario's Ministry of Health requirements.  Korbel coordinated our 3D BIM equipment placements with both architects in the joint venture - Kahler Slater of Milwaukee, and Montgomery Sisam of Toronto. Korbel Associates was retained for the first phase of procurement, preparing bid specifications for the major equipment packages. The project was delivered under the Build-Finance model and the facility was opened in 2017.
